Sarah Leitner with Christina Wunderlich (Part 2/4) – Work in walk, lateral movements and voltes (EN)
Now part 2 with Sarah Leitner and Knabstrupper Indiana Jones, stallion, 5 years old. Christina Wunderlich, the manager of the Oliveira Stables, begins the lesson with careful footwork. The young horse works excellently. When doing the leg, the rider must ensure that he uses impulses and does not constantly press, because otherwise the horse will press against it. In this way, we lead the horse into shoulder-in and from there into a volte, in which Sarah should mobilize the hindquarters well. If the horse then presses inwards, it is important that the rider stops this with the seat, if necessary with a half halt. Sarah should make sure that the horse does not go behind the vertical – if necessary, this must be remedied with an impulse with both legs.
Now comes the change from shoulder-in to counter shoulder-in on the volte to mobilize the horse even more. Christina Wunderlich also explains again that it is not a problem if the horses say that something is difficult. The beginning of gymnastics is always exhausting! But only if we work on the weak points can the horse get better – just like if we start doing yoga. It’s not easy, it can sometimes be a bit sore and tense – but that doesn’t mean it’s wrong or that we should take it away.
