Sarah Leitner with Christina Wunderlich (Part 3/4) – Trot and Canter
Here you can see the third part with Sarah and the Knabstrupper Indiana Jones, stallion, 5 years old with Christina Wunderlich. Make sure that we have regular walking breaks with the reins given, during which the horse can relax.
With stop and back, which can also be a little longer, like 2 or 3 steps, we bring the horse onto its hind leg to prepare for the trot. In the trot, Christina also lets the young stallion mobilize, first in counter shoulder-in, then the whole body in alternation to shoulder-in. You can now clearly see that the young horse is showing an irregularity in its rhythm. This is not lameness as such, but is caused by the horse’s crookedness. You can also see on the other hand the difficulties that the horse still has due to the crookedness.
We have to work on this crookedness in order to keep the horse healthy as a riding horse. Christina reminds Sarah that the leg must always act first. It always takes priority over all other aids. Many riders forget this because it is also exhausting for us! The horse’s left hind leg is less active than the right hind leg. We also have to correct and balance this over time. This is also the reason why the stallion always lets his hind leg stick out backwards when he stops. You can also see that the horse often does not put any weight on the left one. Christina now begins with backward canter transitions. You can immediately see how the collection increases time after time. The counter shoulder-in in the canter now mobilizes the hindquarters and Sarah mentally begins with a „miniature pirouette“. After that, the horse has earned a break.
